The film is based on two short stories by Nikolai Gogol and revolves around an impoverished office worker who finds enough money to by himself a fine coat, hoping that it will give him the necessary status. “A collage of new artistic ideas and methods which the revolution had paved the way for. The motto was montage. It wasn’t just influenced by German expressionism and America slapstick, but a conglomerate of all art films aimed at expanding the aesthetic experience.” (Frieda Grafe)
